Jining, a city in East China's Shandong province, has emerged as a key inland shipping hub as its port has surpassed 100 million metric tons in annual cargo throughput, becoming the first inland port in northern China.
In 2025, Jining Port handled 116 million tons of cargo, representing a year-on-year increase of 19.6 percent. Container throughput reached 522,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), while bulk commodity trade exceeded 70 million tons, spanning 20 provinces, 152 cities, and 19 countries.

Located along the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, Jining has long served as a key node in north-south water transportation. The city accounts for 210 kilometers of navigable waterways along the Grand Canal.
The city's infrastructure has expanded where Jining Port now operates 103 berths of 1,000-ton capacity or above, representing 68 percent of the province's inland total.
Green and intelligent transformation has become a defining feature of Jining's port development.
Liangshan Port, part of Jining Port, has received China's first dual-carbon certification for inland ports and a four-star national green port rating. Longgong Port has developed a fully automated operational process for inland waterways.

Digital platforms are also reshaping port operations. The "Jigangtong" smart system integrates logistics, shipping, and similar services, while a cloud-based ship inspection system has further streamlined procedures and improved operational efficiency.
Port-industry integration continues to deepen. Seven port-adjacent industrial parks, each targeting output of over 10 billion yuan ($1.4 billion), are taking shape. In 2025, the revenue from the port and shipping sector in the city surpassed 1 trillion yuan.
