Despite not yet reaching full bloom, the Caozhou Peony Garden in Heze, East China's Shandong province, attracted over 100,000 visitors within just two days of its opening on April 4.
The secret may lie in the shift from just flower viewing to immersive cultural experiences. The opening ceremony featured a traditional performance with flower goddess-themed parades and ritual readings. From April 4 to 26, daily activities include fairy processions, talent shows, and a range of cultural performances.

At a flower-themed fair, visitors can interact with ancient-costumed characters through poetry duels, archery, riddle games, and craft shopping. Over 30 photo spots blend peony culture with local flair, designed for social media sharing.
Nighttime offers an even more magical experience. A light-and-shadow night tour with lighting and live performances creates an immersive journey. "I thought Heze was only about peonies, but there’s so much more to enjoy," said a tourist from Tianjin.
As the 2026 World Peony Conference and the 35th Heze International Peony Cultural Tourism Festival approach, the city is expanding its "peony+" strategy with more interactive projects, night tours, and cultural fusion to attract all ages.
