A Chinese mainland spokesperson said on Saturday that Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te's visit to Eswatini reflects indifference and a lack of concern with regard to the earthquake currently affecting Taiwan, adding that his so-called "diplomatic achievements" are nothing more than empty tricks.
Chen Binhua, spokesman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, made the remarks in response to media inquiries about Lai's reported travel to Eswatini.
Chen said Lai's conduct would be ridiculed internationally, describing it as "despicable" and likening it to "rat-like" behavior.
Chen reiterated that upholding the one-China principle reflects the will of the international community and represents the prevailing trend of the times.
According to media reports, Lai traveled to Eswatini covertly by air on Saturday and later posted on social media confirming his arrival. The visit had previously been cancelled after several African countries revoked overflight permissions for his aircraft.
Chen said Lai's previous attempt to visit Eswatini failed as relevant countries upheld the one-China principle.
"However, unwilling to accept failure, Lai disregarded propriety and resorted to covert means to travel there," he said.
Eswatini is the only African country that maintains so-called "diplomatic ties" with Taiwan.
Chen also criticized Lai for proceeding with the visit while earthquakes struck the island, saying it not only exposes his indifference and lack of concern toward the people on the island but also shows his stubborn adherence to a "Taiwan independence" separatist stance, making him a "troublemaker".
On Friday, a magnitude 6.1 offshore earthquake struck off Yilan county in Taiwan. According to Xinhua News Agency, strong tremors were felt in many areas.
Chen said that safeguarding peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and living secure and prosperous lives are what people on the island hope for.
"By disregarding public safety and deceiving the people at will, Lai is bound to be rejected by the vast majority of Taiwan compatriots," he said.
He added that Lai's so-called "diplomatic achievements" are carefully constructed illusions that amount to little more than political tricks that will only draw ridicule.
"The overarching trend toward national reunification is irreversible," Chen said.
