For a decade, ecological photographer Zhong Fusheng has tirelessly captured the birds of Shandong province. His tens of thousands of images tell a remarkable story of environmental recovery.

In the early years, Zhong photographed just over a dozen bird species. Today, his lens has recorded more than 280 species, including 50 to 60 under top national protection. Rare birds that once seldom appeared are now frequent visitors. "It's not my photography that improved — Shandong's ecology truly has," Zhong says.
His work documents a decade of reforestation, wetland restoration, and biodiversity gains. What started as a personal passion has turned into a mission. Zhong has evolved from an observer into an active participant and chronicler of Shandong's green transformation. "Every small effort contributes to a healthier nature," he notes.

Behind these inspiring wildlife stories is a solid foundation of ecological restoration and green development. For example, Jinan has cut energy use energy consumption per 10,000 yuan ($1,471.54) of GDP by 26 percent and water use by 29 percent, with PM 2.5 falling 34.7 percent since 2021. All State-controlled water sections have maintained excellent quality for five consecutive years. Dongying's Yellow River Delta now hosts 406 bird species, up from 187. In 2025 alone, 536 Oriental storks bred there, making it the world's largest breeding ground for the species.
