NEW YORK, June 14 (Xinhua) -- Five-time winner Brazil drew 1-1 with Morocco, while Qatar claimed its first FIFA World Cup point thanks to a stoppage-time equalizer in a 1-1 draw with Switzerland on Saturday.

In Group C, Morocco shocked Brazil early at New York New Jersey Stadium, as Ismael Saibari received a through ball from Brahim Diaz to score in the 21st minute. Brazil responded 11 minutes later when Vinicius Jr. cut inside and lashed a powerful strike to level the score.

Neither side could find a winner in a tense second half, leaving both to settle for one point.

The African side carried over the momentum from its historic semifinal run at the 2022 World Cup.

"I want to go beyond the semifinals, but it was a good match. We got a point. We hoped to have more, but one isn't a bad result, and we hope to improve. We showed that we have a strong personality, and we'll continue to do this," said Morocco manager Mohamed Ouahbi.

Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti said, "I think we didn't start very well. I'm a little worried. We lost a lot of duels and possession. In the first half, we had difficulty getting out of the pressure, we could have had more control. Now I'm going to focus on the next game."

Also in Group C, John McGinn's goal helped Scotland edge Haiti 1-0.

In Group B, Miro Muheim's late own goal gave Qatar a historic point against Switzerland. Qatar made its World Cup debut as host nation 2022, but lost all three group matches.

At San Francisco Bay Arena Stadium, Switzerland appeared in control after Breel Embolo converted a 17th-minute penalty, but Qatar equalized in stoppage time when Boualem Khoukhi's header deflected in off Switzerland defender Miro Muheim.

"It was already historic just being here. To get a point today against Switzerland, who for me is one of the best teams in Europe right now. We were able to survive difficult moments, we didn't lose composure when behind, and at the end we got the reward with that goal which gave us that point which had never existed [for us]," said Qatar coach Julen Lopetegui.

Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka felt disappointed about the result. "If you don't take your chances up front, they'll come back to bite you. We have to be clever and experienced enough to see out a game at 1-0. Right now, we're nowhere near in a position to talk about a title or our best-ever World Cup," he said.

Also on Saturday, Australia defeated Turkiye 2-0 in Group D.
