The Yellow River is the mother river of Chinese civilization. The Shandong section, as the core area of Yellow River civilization in the lower reaches, gave birth to two prehistoric civilizational peaks—the Dawenkou Culture and the Longshan Culture—and nurtured Confucian culture, the mainstream of Chinese thought. It is the most concentrated and representative region of Yellow River cultural heritage. Dazhong Net · Haibao News launches the international communication series "Treasures of the Yellow River", taking archaeological sites and national treasures as entry points, to present globally the origin, evolution, and spiritual core of Shandong's Yellow River civilization in a three-dimensional manner.
In the Shandong Museum sits a 6,000-year-old "adorable creature." Standing 21.6 cm tall, it is made of sandy red pottery, fully polished and coated in red slip. With a round face and pricked ears, an arched snout and open mouth, stocky limbs, and a short tail curling upward — it looks like both a pig and a dog, with an endearingly naive charm. In 1959, it emerged from the yellow earth of the Dawenkou Site. From that moment on, the secrets of Neolithic life were encoded within this small red pottery pot.
