Zibo colored glaze art glows in Singapore

Long before glassmaking spread across the world, Zibo's Boshan district in Shandong province was already firing colored glaze. Now, 65 specimens of this historic craft are on display in Singapore.

The Radiant Splendor The Artistry of Zibo Liuli (Glass) exhibition opened at the Level 2 Gallery of the China Cultural Center in Singapore on Sept 17 and runs through Oct 31. Free to the public, it features contemporary works alongside historical artifacts and images, tracing the evolution of Zibo colored glaze from ancient origins to modern creativity.

The exhibition is divided into four sections centering around the theme "light", showcasing works by intangible cultural heritage inheritors and contemporary artists. Zibo's colored glaze firing technique is a national intangible cultural heritage, and a kiln site discovered in Boshan in 1982 confirmed the district as the birthplace of Chinese colored glaze.

Through the interplay of light and glass, the exhibition offers Singaporean audiences an immersive experience of Eastern aesthetics, serving as a cultural bridge between Shandong and Singapore.
