As autumn colors spread across Shandong in recent days, the year’s most intense viewing season has quietly arrived. From the shores of Jiaozhou Bay to the Yellow River estuary, from the foot of Mount Tai to the ancient canal town, the land of Shandong is filled with autumn’s gifts—golden ginkgo, red leaves across mountains, migrating birds and pink muhly grass like mist. Many scenic areas have successively entered their best viewing periods. Autumn here is short but intense, unfolding its seasonal painting in the most concentrated way. This autumn, Shandong is extending an invitation to travelers from around the world.

Jinan’s autumn unfolds around Hongyegu, or Red Leaf Valley. The 26th Red Leaf Festival at Hongyegu has entered its best viewing period, with more than 4,000 mu of smoke trees presenting a spectacular scene of mountains ablaze with red and forests dyed in layers. According to the scenic area, smoke tree leaves generally undergo three stages of change: in early October, they turn from green to yellow, with light red interwoven; from mid-October to early-to-mid November, they turn red en masse, appearing from afar like raging flames; in mid-November, after turning fully red, they fall with the wind, creating a scene of “myriad leaves drifting like cinnabar.” Ascending Wanye Pagoda, visitors can overlook the rich layers of autumn colors across the valley. Meanwhile, Mount Tai has also entered its best autumn viewing period, with red maples, smoke trees and green pines setting each other off, creating distinct layers of color on the mountain. At the Zhoudian Street Corner Park at the foot of the mountain in Tai’an, pink muhly grass is blooming in patches, adding a soft touch to the historically rich mountain city.

In Qingdao, ginkgo trees on both sides of Juyongguan Road generally begin to turn yellow in mid-to-late October, with the viewing period lasting until late November. The golden ginkgo leaves and old German-style buildings set each other off, forming a unique street landscape. To preserve the autumn scenery, relevant departments have adopted a “delayed sweeping” policy for fallen leaves on major scenic roads, allowing the century-old district to show its most authentic autumn charm amid a carpet of fallen leaves. Echoing the land-based autumn colors of Badaguan, the waters of Fushan Bay sparkle under the autumn sun and are called the “Diamond Sea” by visitors; along the shores of Jiaozhou Bay, salt-tolerant seepweed turns red in continuous patches, while winding tidal creeks trace natural textures like a “Tree of the Earth.” Red leaves and the blue sea in the same frame, ginkgo trees and Western-style houses facing each other—this is an autumn combination unique to the Shandong Peninsula.

In Dongying, birds are the star of autumn. The Yellow River estuary wetland is an important stopover on the East Asian-Australasian Flyway. Starting every October, hundreds of thousands of migratory birds—including Baikal teal, shorebirds, Dalmatian pelicans and wild geese—arrive one after another. The spectacular “bird waves” of tens of thousands of birds flying together unfold over the mudflats, forming, together with vast stretches of reed flowers, red-carpet seepweed and the yellow-blue confluence of river and sea, the four signature autumn landscapes of the Yellow River estuary. Dongying has thus earned the title of an “international airport for birds.” It is not only a birdwatching destination but also a concentrated showcase of Shandong’s ecological conservation achievements.

Shandong’s autumn colors are not limited to these places. In Taierzhuang Ancient Town in Zaozhuang, ginkgo trees set off dark tiles and upturned eaves, and the town’s autumn charm attracts many tourists. At the San Kong Scenic Area in Qufu, Jining—the Temple of Confucius, Confucius Cemetery and Kong Family Mansion—golden ginkgo leaves and ancient architectural complexes complement each other, making the millennia-old cultural heritage appear more profound under the autumn sun. At the Shimenli Scenic Area of Kunyu Mountain in Yantai, expanses of pink muhly grass bloom like clouds and sunset glow, with the flowering period lasting until late November. At the Changyang River estuary in the Nanhai New Area of Weihai, winged seepweed gradually changes from light pink to crimson, dyeing the coastal wetland into a unique red landscape, with the viewing period extending into November. From golden yellow to fiery red, from pink mist to crimson, autumn in Shandong is never just one color. Phenological landscapes are affected by temperature changes in a given year, so viewing times may fluctuate slightly.
Autumn in Shandong is also a season of harvest. After the fishing moratorium ended in the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea fishing grounds, about 13,000 registered fishing vessels in Shandong have successively set out to sea, while another statistical measure puts the number of vessels at sea at between 15,000 and 16,000. In the fields, autumn grain crops are growing well, and a bumper harvest is in sight. Culture and tourism, agriculture and fisheries together form the most authentic backdrop of this season.
Shandong is now welcoming its annual feast of color. Mountains and rivers, wetlands, ancient towns and fields intertwine to paint a Shandong autumn scroll that combines ecological beauty, cultural heritage and the atmosphere of harvest. Now is the golden season for autumn viewing in Shandong, with autumn scenery continuing to unfold across the province. Visitors from all quarters are warmly invited to join this autumn rendezvous.
