If you have not been to Zhaowen Terrace, you do not truly know Dengzhou Prefecture. This is Wenshan Park in Wendeng. Zhaowen Terrace towers atop the peak, standing twenty-one point nine meters high, with the First Emperor sits in majesty and his ministers standing in solemn reverence. The court ritual of two thousand years ago is frozen into wind and cloud carved in stone. It was right here, in that very year, that the First Emperor summoned scholars to ascend this hill—and so this city received its name. Below the terrace stand the Wenxing Stone Pavilion and the Wendeng Hall of Notable Scholars, where the deeds and writings of scholars through the ages lie quietly in the passage of time, like volumes never closed. Wind passes through the ancient eaves, stirring the bells hanging from their corners, and the tales of the Qin dynasty still whisper in the wind. Wenshan Park awaits you—to read a city, and see where it came from.
