From tree to coffin, from Cao County to the world

On the occasion of Qingming, I traveled to Cao County, Shandong, to delve into the coffin industry, often deemed "taboo" by outsiders. Here, I witnessed ordinary Paulownia trees transformed into coffins through 32 rigorous processes, securing 90% of Japan's market share. I also gained insight into a group of craftsmen who turned "posthumous affairs" into a thriving industry that uplifts their region, understanding the "living toward death" forged through ordinary perseverance.
