A small town in Qingdao has become a hidden global hub for fashion jewelry manufacturing. Ligezhuang hosts more than 80 jewellery and handicraft enterprises, whose products are mainly exported to Europe and America. The sector records annual sales of approximately 100 million US dollars, accounting for 30 percent of the world's fashion jewelry supply.
Local factories serve a wide spectrum of international brands. Mass-market retailers and fast-fashion names including H&M, Zara, Disney and Walmart source accessories here. Meanwhile, premium brands such as Coach, Givenchy, Kate Spade and Tory Burch also commission local manufacturers to produce their decorative jewellery lines.
The town's cluster of manufacturers demonstrates the strength of China's export-oriented light industry. What appears as an ordinary township quietly supplies fashion accessories for consumers across the globe.
