Can simply smelling a pleasant fragrance restore both body and mind, and can practicing a set of health-preserving exercises correct poor posture? Many people assume aromatherapy is a Western wellness practice, yet Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has actually passed down this wisdom for thousands of years. On the program “Tips from TCM Professors”, Professor Zhou Xia, Director of the Wuyin Daoyin Research Institute at Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and a physician at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, reveals the health-preserving charm of TCM aromatherapy and the tradition of spinal-correcting daoyin exercises.

Many people confuse TCM aromatherapy with ordinary perfume or essential-oil fragrances. Professor Zhou points out the core difference between them: ordinary fragrances can only delight the sense of smell, whereas TCM aromatherapy offers a threefold effect—"delighting the nose, delighting the body, and delighting the spirit." This therapy has a long history, with records dating back to the Huang DiNei Jing(theYellowEmperorsInternalClassic). Fragrant artifacts unearthed from the Mawangdui Han Tombs—including fragrant pillows, incense burners, and aromatherapy bedding—further attest to the ancient wisdom of using fragrance for health preservation from the pre-Qin period through the Han Dynasty.

When it comes to how smelling fragrances can treat illness, Professor Zhou explains that TCM has long held the principle of "aromatic herbs opening the orifices"—the qi of aromatic medicinal materials, when applied externally, can enter the body through the nasal passages; when taken internally, it can be absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract to unblock the meridians, harmonize qi and blood, and soothe the emotions while nourishing the spirit. What is even more remarkable is that olfactory signals travel from the nasal cavity to the brain's limbic system and prefrontal cortex in just 0.2 seconds, allowing them to rapidly regulate emotions and calm the mind—truly achieving "unblocking both the nose and the heart." This embodies the TCM health-preserving truth that "a tranquil spirit brings a tranquil body." Unlike Western aromatherapy, which focuses on the chemical components of essential oils, TCM aromatherapy is grounded in the theories of the four natures and five flavors, as well as meridian tropism, offering a dual effect of "regulating both body and spirit" that combines pharmacological regulation with nourishment of body and mind.

Addressing the currently widespread spinal problems affecting people of all ages—from scoliosis, hunched backs, and rounded shoulders in teenagers to cervical and lumbar spine disorders among middle-aged and elderly people—Professor Zhou also offers a dedicated solution. She points out that spinal imbalance is by no means simply a muscle problem; rather, it is an abnormal physiological curvature caused by imbalances in the fascia and muscle strength, and it cannot be fundamentally resolved by stretching alone.

The program shared a typical international case of therapeutic conditioning: two French teenagers who had come to China for cultural exchange were found, through screening, to have mild scoliosis. Drawing on the twelve-posture daoyin exercises of the ancient Yijinjing, a national-level item of intangible cultural heritage, Professor Zhou Xia—as the fifth-generation inheritor of this tradition—collaborated with sixth-generation inheritors to design a customized daoyin exercise prescription for them. Through gentle spinal realignment and personalized daoyin prescriptions, combined with demonstration teaching by peers, they broke through language barriers to deliver precise conditioning.

It is understood that TCM daoyin is an active, movement-based health-preserving therapy dating back to ancient times, integrating the "three regulations"—regulating the body, regulating the breath, and regulating the mind—to guide qi and harmonize the meridians while softening the sinews and strengthening the bones. After one week of in-hospital conditioning and practice, the two teenagers showed significant improvement in posture and overall bearing. With continued reinforcement through online home-exercise guidance, their scoliosis was essentially corrected within a month—achieving efficient rehabilitation without medication or acupuncture, fully demonstrating the gentle yet effective nature of this TCM intangible cultural heritage technique.

From aromatic regulation of the spirit to spinal correction through daoyin, these two TCM techniques embody the traditional health-preserving philosophy of "the unity of body and spirit." Simple, safe, and suitable for all age groups, they make it easy for millennia-old TCM wisdom to benefit the general public's everyday wellness.
