The export of peonies from Heze is bustling, driven by strong market demand

In the golden autumn season comes the ideal time for planting peonies. Inside the warehouse of the Heze Peony Export Demonstration Zone in Shandong Province, workers are busy yet methodically transporting and loading crates of peony seedlings. This batch of seedlings—comprising over 20 varieties and totaling more than 20,000 plants—is about to set sail for the Netherlands.

To ensure export quality, this year we proactively declined a number of orders in order to fully guarantee the flawless delivery of peony seedlings for export," stated Wu Yonghua, president of the Heze Peony Chamber of Commerce. He added that the company will subsequently expand its exports of peony seedlings to countries such as South Korea and Russia.

Behind this proactive "streamlining" effort lies Heze's steadfast commitment to the quality of its peonies, as well as its deep appreciation for the prestigious title of "China's Capital of Peonies." By 2025, Heze's export volume of peony and peony-like plant seedlings has reached over 2 million plants. The export of peonies not only demonstrates the strength of Heze's peony industry but also provides new strategies and directions for these flowers to reach global markets.

A representative of the Heze Peony Chamber of Commerce told reporters that the export prospects for peony seedlings are vast. The chamber plans to move away from traditional export models by adopting a new approach—exporting potted peonies—thereby paving a new path for the internationalization of Heze's peony seedlings and deepening cooperation with international markets.

Beyond commercial exchanges, the export of Heze peonies has long served as an important means of cultural exchange between China and other countries. As a key symbol of traditional Chinese culture, the peony carries auspicious connotations of prosperity, good fortune, and flourishing development. By crossing oceans with seedlings, more people are coming to appreciate the charm of Chinese peonies, which in turn has further enhanced the international visibility and influence of Heze peonies.
