Hong Fulong's lion dance inheritance follows the ancient techniques for making the lion head, adhering to the four core processes of shaping, pouncing, sketching, and assembling. It innovates material techniques on top of traditional craftsmanship to create lightweight yet durable, and fully expressive handmade lion heads.
First, the framework is established. The artisan builds the lion head frame according to the design, precisely adjusting the symmetrical arcs, taking into account both structural strength and lightweight design, to set the majestic outline of the lion head.
Second, the body of the lion is shaped. Long-fibered paper is laminated multiple times, and then painted and dried layer by layer to make the lion embryo tough and lightweight, solving the problem of the traditional lion head's heaviness and adapting it for competitions and performances.
Third, the spirit of the lion is given. The face is hand-painted with colors, and auspicious patterns are drawn. The color layers are rich, and each stroke shapes the unique expression of the lion head, either fierce or lively.
Fourth, the lion is assembled. The fur, balls, copper mirrors, and movable joints are precisely assembled, and the opening and closing structures of the eyes, ears, and chin are adjusted. The static lion embryo thus becomes lively, and in motion, it exudes a brilliant spirit.
The four stages of one lion embody the principle of upholding tradition while innovating. Hong Fulong Lion Dance uses craftsmanship to revitalize intangible heritage. Each handmade lion head leaves the Shandong Province and travels to stages across the country and even overseas, allowing the lion dance culture to continuously thrive.
