As temperatures gradually drop, the Nanhai New Area in Weihai has welcomed its annual honored guests—whooper swans. Compared with previous years, the swans have arrived earlier this year. The two first arrivals had barely come into visitors’ view in Nanhai when they raised the curtain on the area’s swan-watching season.
Swans are extremely particular about their habitat: they will only fold their wings and stop to rest where the water is clear and food is abundant. As local ecological protection efforts have intensified, formerly barren flats have grown green, fish now shoal in the clear waters, and calls of migratory birds from deep within the reeds are growing denser. The swans’ annual return to spend the winter here is evidence that the ecology of Nanhai New Area continues to improve.
From now on, whooper swans coming to Nanhai for the winter will arrive one after another in long lines. Before long, the waters and the depths of the reed marshes will present a lively scene of gathering white wings and rising calls.
